"Danang, Aug. 5, 1969"

I think about my dad every day. He retired from serving and he always had "war stories," and of course, some didn't involve war at all but stories about his buddies that he served with. Thanks, dad, and thanks to all your friends who served and especially those who fought in wars we won and lost. And thanks to my brothers, who served their country as well.

My cynicism prevents me from ever thinking there will ever be peace around the world, but there will always be good men and women across the globe who put their lives on the line to seek the impossible, that ideal, so that we might at least taste it for a while. To those good men and women, we thank you today and every day.

(At the time of this photo, my dad was a CM2, serving with Naval Construction Battalion 5, The Fighting Seabees. On the back in my dad's writing is a note to my mother: "To the one who is waiting. My honey.")
